Invest 1 hr of research into Bullying… October is National Bullying prevention month-

i was fortunate to attend the beyond bullying workshop in Cleveland past weekend, which was very insightful.

i spent some time researching on this topic-

Between 1 in 4 and 1 in 3 U.S. students say they have been bullied at school.

It is reported that 30% children are bullied worldwide.

Research shows that bullying is a public health issue that negatively impacts outcomes for youth involved.

Around one in six US adolescents (15 per cent) in grades 9 through 12 were bullied electronically in the last year. Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 2013 Youth Risk Behavior Survey.

Recent findings from neuroscience, positive psychology and evolutionary biology indicate that all students, including those involved in bullying, demonstrate compassion and inclusiveness when their school invests in the culture that support these behaviors.

Parents, school staff, and other adults in the community can help kids prevent bullying by talking about it, building a safe school environment, and creating a community-wide bullying prevention strategy.

Identify that bullying is a public health problem and requires a coordinated community response

• It is important to highlight bullying as a public health problem to keep children safe.

• The only way to eliminate bullying is to connect with strong partners in the community who know how to recognize, intervene, and prevent bullying from occurring in the future.

In 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Department of Education released the first federal uniform definition of bullying for research and surveillance. The core elements of the definition include:

· unwanted aggressive behavior;

· observed or perceived power imbalance;

· Repetition of behaviors or high likelihood of repetition.

Although bullying is commonly associated with kids and adolescents it also impacts adults

There are many different modes and types of bullying-

Bullying isn’t limited to physical abuse — verbal, emotional, and cyberbullying

IMPACT OF BULLYING- WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO DISCUSS IT?

Bullying can contribute to students feeling socially isolated, worthless or depressed. In addition, the psychological effects of bullying can last well into adulthood and increase a person’s chance of experiencing things like anxiety disorders.

The costs of bullying

The impacts of bullying are painful and often enduring.

· Bullying can cause its targets physical harm and leave long-lasting mental health effects similar to child abuse in severity and long-term persistence, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, shame and suicidal ideation.

· Students who bully are at increased risk of school absenteeism, drug abuse and criminality.

· Bullying is part of a continuum of violence. Unless interrupted, students who bully in the middle years of school are more likely to engage in dating violence, and sexual harassment in the final years of school and beyond.

· Bullying brings massive social costs. Particularly at risk are students from minority races and religions, LGBTQ youth, students with physical and mental disabilities. As nations across the world struggle to affirm social justice and integrate immigrant youth, bullying remains the vehicle by which diverse youth are isolated and marginalized.

Although bullying is commonly associated with kids and adolescents it also impacts adults.

Couple of months ago I underwent diversity and inclusion training at work.

DIVERSITY is about her different characteristics while inclusion encompasses all.

Inclusion is involvement and empowerment where the inherent worth and dignity of all people are recognized. An inclusive organization promotes a sense of belonging, it values and practices risk factor for the talents, beliefs, backgrounds and ways of living of it’s members.

BURGER KING AD-

Has someone seen Burger King ad on bullying?

Only 12% of people stood up for a high school child being bullied.

Here is the link-

The key point is that we need to increase awareness about this issue.

Fortunately Vedanta teaches inclusivity not exclusivity. If we all practice compassion, empathy, kindness, love, it can bring a huge change.

at Absolute level- it’s Self in All and All in Self.

Who is there to bully?
